Why premium curtains are worth the investment
Most people treat curtains as an afterthought something to sort after the sofa arrives. But a room's curtains are one of its largest visual surfaces. They frame every window, affect how light moves through the space, and set the tone for everything inside it.
The difference between a standard curtain and a premium curtain is rarely just the price tag. It's the weight of the fabric, the precision of the fall, the way it holds its pleat three years in. Premium curtains age well. Cheaper ones rarely do.
Step 1 : Choose your fabric first

Fabric is where the decision starts. It determines how the curtain falls, how much light it filters, how it performs in your climate, and how it holds up over time. For premium curtain fabrics, the main categories to understand are:
Woven textures and jacquards
These are the workhorses of premium curtaining structured weaves that hang beautifully and hold their shape. Casamance from France is a benchmark here: their woven collections combine refined texture with colour that doesn't fade. Ideal for living rooms and formal dining spaces where you want presence without pattern overload.
Silk and silk-effect fabrics
Nothing catches evening light the way silk does. Jim Thompson, the Thai silk authority, produces curtain fabric with a luminosity that synthetic alternatives can't replicate. Worth considering for bedrooms and drawing rooms where you want warmth and a sense of occasion.
Velvet
Rubelli's silk velvets are the standard by which other velvets are judged. Dense, light-absorbing, and extraordinarily tactile velvet curtains add depth and drama to a room. They're also surprisingly practical: the pile traps sound and insulates well.
Printed and hand-painted fabrics
Dedar of Milan produces some of the most distinctive printed curtain fabrics available botanical, graphic, and abstract designs rendered with the kind of colour depth that only hand-finishing achieves. If you want your curtains to be the room's defining detail, this is the direction.
Step 2 : Understand curtain styles
The heading style determines the silhouette of the curtain and how it moves. For premium curtains, the most considered options are:
Pinch pleat
The classic of formal interiors. Triple-pinch pleats create a structured, architectural fold that reads as luxurious even in natural light. Best suited to floor-to-ceiling drops in living rooms and formal dining spaces.
Eyelet
A cleaner, more contemporary heading. Metal eyelets slide on a rod and create uniform, relaxed folds. Works well with heavier fabrics and in spaces with a more modern or minimal sensibility.
Wave or S-fold
The most considered heading for premium interiors right now. A wave heading creates continuous, even curves across the whole curtain no breaks, no bunching. It requires precise fabric allowance and good track engineering (Hunter Douglas systems are built for this), but the result is exceptional.
Goblet pleat
A more formal variation on the pinch pleat, with cylindrical pleats stuffed to hold their shape. Often seen in grand drawing rooms and hotel interiors. Works best at full height and in fabrics with good body.

Step 3 : Get the fit right
Even the finest fabric fails if the curtain is the wrong size. These are the rules that matter:
Length
For living rooms and bedrooms, curtains should fall to the floor and ideally just break on it, creating a barely-there puddle. A curtain that stops above the floor almost always looks unfinished. A curtain that's too long creates a tripping hazard. The sweet spot is 1–2cm of break on a hard floor; for a deliberate puddle effect, 10–15cm extra.
Width
Premium curtains require more fabric than you think. For a full, rich look, the combined width of your curtain panels should be 2.5 to 3 times the width of the window. Less than this, and even excellent fabric will look thin when drawn back.
Track placement
Hang the track as high as possible ideally at ceiling height or close to it. This makes the room feel taller and gives the curtain its full visual impact. A track mounted just above the window frame wastes the height of the room.
The brands that define premium curtaining
Understanding which brands to look for helps cut through the noise. These are the collections at the standard worth specifying:
All of these collections are available to view and touch at Decorgeous Lifestyle's premium curtain showroom in Chennai the only destination in the city where they're presented at full drop, exactly as they perform in a real room.
Curtains and the rest of the room
Curtains don't exist in isolation. The most considered rooms treat them as part of a layered soft-furnishing system coordinating with upholstery and accent fabrics, complementing cushion textures from the designer cushion collection, and working with blinds and track systems where light control needs to be more precise.
The strongest interiors don't mix randomly they build a palette across soft furnishings that reads as intentional. That's where a showroom visit, rather than online browsing, genuinely pays for itself: you see the fabrics together, in real light, at real scale.
